Sleeping Giant

Sleeping Giant

The Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest toothed mammal on Earth. Measuring up to 60 feet in length, this marine mammal also has the largest brain of all creatures.

This huge animal is amazingly graceful, as well as being a highly social species. The more that I have learned about them, I become ever more fascinated with these animals.

Once hunted to a point of depletion, being unviable commercially, the Sperm Whale is currently under protection. Scientists are yet uncertain if the Sperm Whale as a species will ever recover from the whaling that took place in the 20th century.

Each year the Japanese whaling fleet sets out for a quota of 10 Sperm Whales, still listed as an Endangered Species. Many other species of Whales are being threatened with the resumption of commercial whaling. For further information, please click here.
